    7 Smart Camping Season Hacks

Spring is in the air, so it’s time to enjoy great outdoors. Camping is an excellent way to take in nature and relax after a busy week. Whether you like to trek deep into the woods or stay within reach of civilization, we've got some smart camping hacks to make your next trip more enjoyable.

    Light It Up!
Not quite sleepy yet, but can't see your camping companions? Attach a head lamp to a big jug of water, light side in. You'll be surprised how much the water disperses the light!

Also, to save batteries, you can paint the inside of a glass jar with glow-in-the-dark paint. When you're doing your camping preparation, keep the jar in sunlight to activate the paint's chemicals.

    Nature Calls
Your body doesn't stop, ahem, going, just because you're far away from a bathroom. Be prepared with your own toilet paper. Recycle a plastic cylinder container (think coffee can) to hold the roll. You can just keep the toilet paper inside, or you can cut out a slit down the side to pull the paper out. Make it even fancier with holes on the top and bottom to string some twine. Now your toilet paper is protected from the elements and can hang on a tree branch or campsite bathroom hook.

    Camping Doesn't Mean Skipping Coffee
Be ready for the day's adventures with a hot brew. Stock up on single serve packets of instant coffee, or you can go the smart camping hacks route by making your own. Measure out a serving's worth of coffee into a coffee filter. Tie it off with dental floss (unflavored and unwaxed works the best). Then, dip the coffee bag as you would a tea bag into a mug of hot water.

    Roaring Campfire
Camping isn't complete without a blazing fire. Get yours going with cotton pads dipped in wax! Another option is to save cardboard-only egg cartons during your camping preparation. Fill them with match-light charcoal. This way, you don't have to lug an entire bag of charcoal to the site. Finally, add some bundles of fresh sage leaves to the fire to keep your campsite mosquito-free.

    Bring the Essentials
This is one of our favorite smart camping hacks because it helps you to be prepared for anything without feeling like you over-packed. Cut up plastic straws and fill with spices, single use toothpaste, sun block, first aid creams, soap, and anything else you need. Seal the edges by carefully melting the plastic together over a candle flame. Remember to label what's in each packet!

    Laundry Time!
If your camping trip will extend over a few days, bring along a portable washer. Get a five gallon bucket with a top (without the top will result in more splashing while you clean). If you can find a top with a hole already cut out, great. If not, you'll need to cut one out that will fit the handle of a regular old rubber plunger. On the plunger, cut out the gasket, then cut three to six quarter-sized holes around the plunger's perimeter. The plunger will act as the washer's agitator and the holes help the detergent from sudsing up too much. Use a tablespoon or two of detergent per bucket of water.

    Keep Yourself Clean
After your laundry is washed, don't forget about yourself! Make single use soap shards by peeling a bar of soap with a vegetable peeler. You can also rub soap on mosquito bites to help alleviate the itchiness! How's that for smart camping hacks?
